Following the resurrection of the D-Max and our Tip Trip it was time to treat ourselves to a short island holiday. Thursday Island was another of Chris’ bucketlist projects, so we organised a two-day guided tour and over night stay on Horn Island.
Our first day on Thursday Island was actually a Tuesday and then the next day on Horn Island which was Wednesday. Chris would have liked to have also visited Possession Island, where Lt James Cook made his extraordinary procuration back in 1770, that still has most of us debating the confounded issues today. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, adverse sea conditions this adventure will have to wait until his next trip to the Cape York.
We really enjoyed the two days, guided by husband and wife team Liberty and Vanessa from Torres Strait Heritage. They were extremely informative and entertaining tour guides.
Other highlight while on the island included having a chat with the regional police commander on the ferry ride from Thursday to Horn Island, chatting to other locals on Thursday Island after the last ferry load of tourist, left to return to the mainland, the island became more tranquil and people were more relaxed. Unfortunately, we just missed meeting Pat Mills on Thursday Island by just a few days. The NBA superstar, was visiting the home of his father and was promoting the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. He also just happened to be a former student at Marist College Canberra where our two sons went to school.
